Why did the South decide to name Richmond its capital which is only 90 miles from Washington, DC? I've heard Virginia referred to as "The Cashbox of the Confederacy" so, clearly there was political pressure brought to bear to have Richmond as the capital city but, strategically it made no sense leading into secession and ultimately the war.

Sherman's march to the sea was in late 1864 thus proving that no part of the South would have been unreachable by Northern armies but, Confederate leadership could not have known this at the start of the war...Atlanta, Charleston, Montgomery or Jackson would have been smarter choices. Davis himself was born in KY and served Congress from MS. Was the decision for Richmond his alone? Was this a factor in the war's outcome?
