Question About Capt. Jean-Luc Picard U.S.S. Enterprise (6 replies)

Yeah, yeah...I wasn't even born in the century this show was made in, so it's ALL new to me...

Why if the character's name is Jean-Luc Picard, an obvious French moniker, does Patrick Stewart play him with a British accent? Stewart is a talented actor and could've likely provided a suitable French accent but plays it British. There have been several times (I'm only through season 2...) where he alludes to his French ancestry and even speaks French...Or if Stewart insisted on a British accent, why didn't they just rename the character Oliver Daniels or another suitably British name?

My Dad says it's because during the Eugenics Wars, the British conquered the French so, while their surnames have survived, their culture did not. I have found nothing within the Star Trek canon that supports this...
